What is included in a Starter Bass Guitar Package?

So what constitutes a starter bass guitar package/kit and where can you find one that fills your needs? The package usually consists of a starter bass guitar, strap, amplifier and cable, tuner, picks and a gig bag. In order to help beginners there are also CDs or DVDs that are packed full of lessons. Other kits may also include stereo headphones and a stand.

You don’t need to buy a kit from a company you’ve never heard of. Many famous guitar manufacturers like Fender/Squier, Gibson/Epiphone, Ibanez, Yamaha, Washburn, etc. all produce bass guitar packages. You will find these packages available online at many musical instrument sites where you will find details of what the package includes as well as specs for the bass guitar and amplifier.

There are also a number of replacement parts that you can buy that will keep your bass like new.  These replacement parts include strings, bridges and tail pieces, knobs, machine heads, pick guards, pick up covers, strap buttons, nuts, truss rod covers, toggle switches, whew! I think you get the picture. Just about everything can be replaced and/or customized.

Guitar kits contain everything you need to start playing bass immediately and at a reasonable cost. When searching for a bass guitar starter kit, be sure to check the suggested age for the package. Some kits are made for pre-teens and come with a bass guitar that is smaller in size than an adult bass. You don’t want a child grappling with the size and weight of a full-sized bass and adults will look rather foolish with a scaled-down version meant for kids.

Some of the basses included in these packages are replicas of classic guitars like the Fender Precision bass or Gibson EB-0. If you want to discover what made these basses so special, you can find out at Vintage Bass Guitar.

Jaco Pastorius is Bass Guitar

"The techniques and playing styles he introduced to music are used everywhere, in every style of music – not just jazz"

Sept. 21, 2010 marked the passing 23 years ago of Jaco Pastorius, considered one of the greatest (many say the greatest) bass players of all time.

Here's a nice little article about him: Jaco Pastorius is Bass Guitar

There are plenty of Youtube videos about him, many are of poor quality but I found this one which I really enjoyed. That's a Fender Jazz Bass he's playing. A vintage bass guitar that would later bear his name as a Fender tribute bass.

Slap Technique

When you mention bass guitar slap technique the first name that comes to mind is Larry Graham, or at least it should be.

He was the bass guitar player for Sly & the Family Stone & founded the funk band Graham Central Station (get it?)

Larry Graham is credited with inventing the slap technique… he calls it Thumpin’ & Pluckin’. This technique, as well as some variants, are used by bassist like Less Claypool, Marcus Miller, Bernard Edwards, Flea and many others.

Instead of reading about it why not let Larry Graham show you how it’s done?
