Bass Guitar Play-Along: Led Zeppelin Songbooks

These songbooks are designed so you can play along to many of the best-known Led Zeppelin classics in the comfort of your own home.

These TABs and tracks deliver unprecedented accuracy and insight into the music of Led Zeppelin and the style of John Paul Jones. All new transcriptions and tracks were drawn from more than 30 years of documentation, interviews and recorded footage.

Each book includes complete music notation and TAB transcriptions to eight Led Zeppelin classics. There are two versions of every song on the included CDs: an instrumental sound-alike recording, and an Instrumental accompaniment track (without bass) so you can play along.

When you use the CDs in your Mac or Windows-based computer, the TNT (Tone ’N’ Tempo) Changer lets you easily loop sections for practice, slow tracks down or speed them up without changing the pitch, change the key, and switch back and forth between full instrumental and accompaniment tracks.

There are two separate volumes you can get:

Volume 1 includes:
  1. Black Dog
  2. Communication Breakdown
  3. Dazed and Confused
  4. Heartbreaker
  5. Immigrant Song
  6. Rock and Roll
  7. Since I've Been Loving You
  8. Whole Lotta Love
Volume 2 includes:
  1. Stairway to Heaven
  2. The Song Remains the Same
  3. Over the Hills and Far Away
  4. Trampled Under Foot
  5. Kashmir
  6. Achilles Last Stand
  7. Nobody's Fault But Mine
  8. All My Love
Here at Vintage Bass Guitar we're glad to see bass play-along songbooks for Led Zeppelin, who were one of the most successful and influential bands of the 1970s.

Silvertone Basses by Danelectro - Affordable Quality

IN THE 1950S AND ’60S, THE SEARS CATALOG was a staple in virtually every household in America. A variety of manufacturers made guitars and basses for Sears, including Harmony, Valco/Supro, Teisco, Kay, and Danelectro, who made the bass shown below. Nathan Daniel started making amplifiers for Epiphone in the 1930s, and in 1947 he founded Danelectro. The next year he landed the Sears & Roebuck account, and began manufacturing amplifiers for them exclusively. In 1957, Danelectro began making guitars for Sears under the iconic Silvertone brand name. For the next decade, a wide variety of well-made, inexpensive basses and guitars jumped out of the Sears mail order catalog into the eager hands of aspiring musicians all over the country. The classic Dano features—lipstick pickups, semi-hollow masonite bodies, and the infamous “amp in the case”—all became part of Silvertone lore. John Entwistle played a Dano on the Who’s epic “My Generation,” and the E Street Band’s Gary Tallent has used Danelectros extensively over the years.

This 1967 short-scale bass—known as the 1442— and its big brother, the 1443, were the last Silvertone bass models produced by Danelectro before the company was sold to MCA. At the time, the vast majority of Danelectro’s products were made for Sears, but this was to be the end of the line, as the company ceased production in 1969. The 1442 sold for the bargain price of $79.95— or you could pay $5 a month! For a mere $114.95, you could get the two-pickup 1443, a long-scale bass which also featured Fender-style tuners, as opposed to the one-piece “skate key” tuners on the 1442. Silvertones may have been inexpensive, but they were very well made, and this two-tone coffee-colored beauty still sounds great and plays wonderfully.

This slim solidbody’s shape is reminiscent of a Fender Jaguar, and features the classic Dano bridge (with a wooden saddle), a large pickguard, and a thumbrest. The 21-fret neck is straight and fast, and the intonation is quite good. It has a neck tilt adjustment on the back, as well. The large, round volume and tone knobs look like they came off a Silvertone amp of that era. The electronics are elegant in their simplicity and allow quite a bit of variation. The alnico “lipstick” pickup sounds sweet, and the three-way tone switch gives a number of cool sonic options. In the middle position it is flat, and the bass boost position fattens things up nicely with a throaty midrange. The third position cuts the low end quite dramatically and could be helpful if playing a palm-muted “tic-tac” style part. In any position, the short-scale thump is always in evidence, especially with flatwound strings. In short, this bass is a gas to play and could fit into any number of musical situations.

The 1442 may have been the last bass model to be made in the Neptune, NJ Danelectro factory, but the influence and style of the company’s guitar and bass models have stood the test of time and had a big impact on many young musicians of the day. It’s been a long time since Sears was in the musical instrument business, but way back in the day, Silvertone products were an affordable option for many aspiring musicians, and considering the build quality of the 1442, there may still be few of these out there in good shape.

You can find out more about Danelectro by visiting Vintage Bass Guitars.

Thanks to Nashville bassist Don Kerce for sharing this cool bass from the Swinging ’60s!

7 Tips to Buy Bass Guitar

Before you buy bass guitar there are some things you need to check out first. Since you’ll be dishing out your hard earned cash you need to make an informed decision. To get the most bang for your buck, do a little research and testing before choosing the best bass for you. Here are some tips to get you started.

Get the Feel

If you are buying your first bass it’s best to buy it in a local music shop. Although it may cost a little more you’ll be able to handle it and get it serviced more readily if need be. Once you take it off the rack and get it in your hands don’t hesitate to play with it. This will give you a feel for the guitar and whether it is meant for you or not. You should always do this before buying any instrument.

Inspection

If the bass feels right to you then start with the inspection. If it’s a new bass make sure that it doesn’t have any nicks, blemishes, scratches or damage of any kind. Check the back as well as the front of the instrument. If you’re buying a used bass guitar there is bound to be some wear and nicks, but make sure there is no significant damage.

Check the Neck

Angle the neck so you can see if it’s straight. The fret board should be made evenly for comfortable placement of the finger when playing. Neck-through designs are stronger and provide greater sustain while bolt-on necks give you that punchier sound.

Nuts and Bolts

Every detail should be inspected before you buy bass guitar. The truss rods should be working correctly as well as the tailpiece and bridge. The tuning keys should be switched easily. For less future maintenance you may want a bass with enclosed machine heads as they will resist corrosion and rust.

Bodywork

The woodwork should be smooth to the touch. Different woods provide different tone and also factors into the weight of the guitar. The weight will be important depending on whether you will be spending most of your time standing or sitting when playing your bass.

Electronics

Electric bass guitars require the use of an amplifier so make sure you are hooked up to one when checking it out. This is the only way you can really hear the sound and it also makes sure that the electronics are working properly. Basses come in a variety of passive and active pickups. If you choose a bass with active pickups just remember that battery replacement will be needed at some point.

Experience and Patience

Try being patient and don’t rush in and buy the first bass you see, try out many as you can and in varying scale lengths. If the bass guitar is new to you, then you should try bringing along someone who is more experienced and knowledgeable. After you’ve selected one that feels right to you, let him play and examine it so he can tell you if it is worth buying or not.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find the perfect bass right off the bat. There are many other dealers around which carry different inventory so just keep shopping around and eventually you will buy bass guitar that suits your needs.

Metallica's Trujillo Rescues Jaco Pastorius' Bass of Doom

"The Pastorius family was electrified to learn in December 2007 that Jaco’s Bass of Doom — the fretless 1962 Fender Jazz Bass that had been stolen from a park bench in Greenwich Village in 1986 — had actually surfaced in a small music store in Manhattan’s east side."

Some things you just can't make up.  Jaco's fretless Jazz Bass went missing for over 20 years and then suddenly re-emerged.

Top 10 Bass Guitar Players Today........Really?

I came across an article last week in which someone listed their opinion of the "Top 10 Bass Guitar Players Today".

The article heading is misleading because it led me to believe these were current bass players or at least they were all still alive. Upon reading the article I found that a couple of these bassists are deceased, so it's really a list of all-time top bass players.

I've got two problems with this:

1 - I don't agree with the list
2 - The writer closed the comments so you can't voice your opinion...Gee, I wonder why?

Okay it's his article and he's entitled to write what he wants...blah, blah, blah. Fine, but there were two such blatant omissions (in my opinion) that I was wondering what everyone else thought. But (did I mention) the comments are closed.

Well, they are not closed here. Check out the article and let me know what you think: Top 10 Bass Players Today.

So who were the two omissions? Well I'll give you a hint. One of them played a fretless version of this Fender Bass.

What is included in a Starter Bass Guitar Package?

So what constitutes a starter bass guitar package/kit and where can you find one that fills your needs? The package usually consists of a starter bass guitar, strap, amplifier and cable, tuner, picks and a gig bag. In order to help beginners there are also CDs or DVDs that are packed full of lessons. Other kits may also include stereo headphones and a stand.

You don’t need to buy a kit from a company you’ve never heard of. Many famous guitar manufacturers like Fender/Squier, Gibson/Epiphone, Ibanez, Yamaha, Washburn, etc. all produce bass guitar packages. You will find these packages available online at many musical instrument sites where you will find details of what the package includes as well as specs for the bass guitar and amplifier.

There are also a number of replacement parts that you can buy that will keep your bass like new.  These replacement parts include strings, bridges and tail pieces, knobs, machine heads, pick guards, pick up covers, strap buttons, nuts, truss rod covers, toggle switches, whew! I think you get the picture. Just about everything can be replaced and/or customized.

Guitar kits contain everything you need to start playing bass immediately and at a reasonable cost. When searching for a bass guitar starter kit, be sure to check the suggested age for the package. Some kits are made for pre-teens and come with a bass guitar that is smaller in size than an adult bass. You don’t want a child grappling with the size and weight of a full-sized bass and adults will look rather foolish with a scaled-down version meant for kids.

Some of the basses included in these packages are replicas of classic guitars like the Fender Precision bass or Gibson EB-0. If you want to discover what made these basses so special, you can find out at Vintage Bass Guitar.

Bass guitar & classical music

The electric bass guitar, invented in 1935 by Paul Tutmarc, turns 75 years old in 2010.

Now when you hear the term electric bass guitar what do you think of?

Do you think of great bass players like Jaco Pastorius, John Entwistle and Victor Wooten?

Perhaps you associate it with a type of music like Blues, Jazz or Rock.

Would you ever associate it with Mozart? After watching this video you just might.

"Godfather of Bass Guitar" dies

I just learned about the death of Robert Wilson, one of three brothers who founded the Gap Band.

It didn't seem to make much of a splash on the TV news or in newspapers, which is sad, but anyone nicknamed the "Godfather of Bass Guitar" was obviously a talented musician and he died all too soon.

Here is a short article on the death of Robert Wilson.

We here at Vintage Bass Guitar send out our condolences to his brothers Ronnie and Charlie and to the entire Wilson family.
